Obverse 2.

Reverse B. Long heavy dentils, very close to the legend with some nearly touching letters. Long stems lying along ribbons with ends unusually close to them. C in CENT is high and leans right. Eight berries left and seven right, with a detached eighth berry a little above and right of that at M.

Edge: 1. Point and stem of leaf after DOLLAR point down.

See illustration on page 95.

Die states: I. Obverse as preceding, state IV: bulge from below the cap to middle curl. No reverse rust.

II. As in 3b.

Equivalents: Maris 2, "Double Chin." Frossard 2.1.

Doughty 19. Hays 2. McGirk 8B. Ross 2-A. Chapman 2. Sheldon 19a. EAC 3a. Encyclopedia 1652.

High Rarity 5.

Remarks: This subvariety was reportedly discovered by Harlan P. Smith before 1906. Specimens are usually on cruder, darker planchets than the Taylor & Bailey blanks used for 2b.

According to Sheldon, Maris called this the "Ugly Tooth" reverse, for its prominent, sharply pointed dentils. (Early American Cents, p.85; Penny Whimsy, p.87)

I have found no earlier mention in print. The reverse die looks very similar to reverse I, below.

Dan Trollan reports an example from the Gary Ruttenberg collection (Early Copper Auction, 8/1996, lot 72)with the edge blundered ONE HUNDREDED FOR A DOLLAR. (Letter to Mark Borckardt, April 28, 1997.)
