Obverse 24. Coarse hair similar to the preceding. The lowest lock ends in a wedge-shaped point. End of the sixth lock is chopped off and remains isolated in the field. Plain hollow shoulder loop with crumbling along the truncation from the shoulder loop to a point just left of the top of 4. Hollow between the eye and nose is due to overpolished dies. Bases of RT nearly touch, unlike earlier dies with this reverse. Date spaced 17 9 4 with the 9 leaning right and the 4 almost touching the bust. Irregular traces of repunching on the right side of 1. A small faint spine slants down from a dentil above top of L. Several of these features may not show on worn examples.

Reverse BB. Advanced rim crumbling above AM and left although this may not be visible due to centering.

Die states: Obverse as noted. Reverse is always weaker at the right rim, above AMERICA. The additional crack claimed at lot 93 of the Jack H. Robinson collection sale is a planchet defect.

Equivalents: Elder-Hays 58. McGirk 9F. Ross 37-D.

Chapman 47. Sheldon 53. EAC 43. Encyclopedia 1668.

Rarity 6.

Remarks: Discovered by Henry Chapman in 1897 and long known as the "Chapman variety." The Adams coin (lot 48) exhibited lamination defects.
