Obverse 17. Cracked as preceding with a bulge between the lower curls and back of the cap.
Reverse V. Chips out of the die from TA through wreath, 0 CEN, ribbon bows, and fraction, to the border. The most obvious ones are within the left bow and between the right ribbon end and final A. Seven berries left and six right, the smallest one within the wreath below M. Right ribbon end isnarrow and almost hollow, obviously altered by hand to minimize the signs of breakage. Numerator leans right, the final zero is high, and the fraction bar is short and tapering toward its right end.
Die states: As noted.
Equivalents: Sheldon NC-5. EAC 32. Encyclopedia 1668.
Rarity 8. Two known.
Remarks: Discovered by John Pawling in 1951. This die combination confirmed the Sheldon order in this group: no previous writer had thought to juxtapose the varieties which Sheldon numbered 44 and 45.
The parallel chips out of the die probably occurred during the hardening process.
Most likely struck June 4.
