Obverse 36. Four upper locks end in a vertical straight line. B is high and its lower serif is very weak. T is high. Crowded date with the 1 nearly touching the hair above and the 7 almost touching a dentil. The 4 almost touches the bust.
Reverse OO. Standard pattern, unlike reverses MM and NN: a double leaf at ED and a triple at OF. Narrow space between the ribbons, as in reverse LL. Six berries left and seven right. Two leaves above (N)E are narrow and bent, the upper one touching the wreath stem above. Three upper berries on the left branch are stemless or virtually so. In AMERICA, E and C are low and E is below M. In CENT, C leans right, E leans left, and NT are lower.
Die states: Both survivors show faint traces of a crack from D to wreath, as in variety 65.
Equivalents: McGirk 4N. Chapman 58. Sheldon NC-3. EAC 62. Encyclopedia 1669.
Rarity 8. Only two reported.
Remarks: There is no clue as to why this obverse die was discarded so quickly. The most likely reason is sudden failure, however, to date, no example exhibiting such failure has been seen, or even rumored.
Struck between states I and III of variety 65. Therefore, this variety formed a few dozen of the 20,021 delivered December 30. Some have speculated this variety to comprise the odd 21 coins.
Discovered by Ebenezer Gilbert, about 1912.
