Walter Breen
Rarity 1.
Remarks: Other collectors, for clarity, have called this the "Second Marred Field."
Hays 38 was described as obverse of his 37, reverse of his 39: the equivalent of an earlier die state of the present variety before the obverse had been reworked. The original worn Hays coin was later identified as a normal specimen of the present number. This obverse die was either retrieved or preserved, resoftened, and again reworked. For its subsequent use see numbers 25-28. Either this was a deliberate experiment or the shortage of die steel of proper diameter must have been acute. No Archives records seen to date throw light on the problem.
Frossard mentioned one with an edge blunder producing ONE HUNDR DOLLAR. The ANS has one, ex Charles E. Clapp, Sr., with edge ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR, and another, ex B. G. Johnson, with edge ONE HUNDREDR A DOLLAR. Dupont: 46 has the edge reading ONE HUN A DOLLAR. Dan Trollan reported an example in his collection with the edge lettered ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR. (Letter to Mark Borckardt, Apri128, 1997.) An example in the John S. Ashby collection is described as 15% off-center at K-2. See "Oops!" chapter, below.
Probably struck March 14-21, over 60,000 in all.
