Obverse 12. Always with the rim break above LI.
Reverse L. Usually identified by the central bulge and "wheel spoke" breaks. Innermost leaf of the triplet is longest. Lowest right leaves are unusually close together. Fraction is skewed to the right. Lowest left berry touches the bow. Six berries on each branch with those nearest C(E) and M largest. In ONE CENT, 0 and C are low.
Die states: 1. Reverse buckled at CEN but with no breaks. Sheldon said he had seen only one: Downing: 1669, later to Jack Robinson. Good.
II. One radial break from rim to I(T). Extremely rare.

III. Three "wheel spoke" breaks: rim to I(T), rim to A(M), and faintest traces at rim left of u. (Clapp said this had four breaks, but the crack at right ribbon end requires imagination to see.) Extremely rare. Sheldon said he had seen only two in this state.
IV. Bulge involves ONE CENT. Five breaks: rim left of u, rim to I(T), rim right of D, rim through A(M), and rim toright ribbon end.
V. A sixth break from the rim between AT.

VI. Obverse cracked from rim break to cap. All reverse breaks are heavy except the one at the right ribbon end. Central bulge obliterates a berry between AM. Later, the break at the right ribbon end also becomes heavy. (Editor's note: The manuscript referenced a seventh break from rim through final 5, which may not exist. The original source for this is not known.)
