Obverse 25. Top three locks are unusually far apart. Single thin hair strand atop the head ends below Ii another protrudes above the end of the fourth lock. Fifth curl point from bottom arises from a wave, not from the end of a lock. Heavy hollow shoulder loop. Within a hollow place in the hair, in a gap in the second lock, above the 1 and space left, is a microscopic crack slanting down to the right. B is slightly low. The date is spaced 179 4 with the 7 leaning markedly to the right. This is best seen by noting the angle between the top of the 7 and the bottom of the shoulder loop. Two dentils join above IB with the right one longer.

Reverse BB. Often, especially on later states, properly aligned with clear dentils at the right. This die was likely realigned in the press after removal of clash marks. Rim crumbling involves seven or eight dentils from right of the F to above M.

Die states: I. No clash marks.

II. No obverse clash marks. Faint reverse clash marks from the hair within the wreath.

III. Heavy clash marks in the hair, near cap, and above the head. Heavy clash marks from hair in the wreath.

IV. Faint, nearly horizontal crack from the rim to hair below the cap. The Robinson S. Brown Jr. coin shows, under strong magnification, at least three sets of obverse clash marks, almost perfectly aligned.
