Die states: I. No obverse clash marks. The right wreath stem is normal (compare to state 11). Two faint shadowy sets of clash marks from the bust at s o.
II. Reverse is reground with the right wreath stem attenuated, notably right of ONE CENT. Tail of R is thinner. Fourfold clash marks from the wreath above the head and at the profile, and from the hair and cap in the wreath.
III. Sevenfold clash marks on the obverse and reverse Equivalents: Maris 50. Hays 50. McGirk 4G. Ross 31- DD. Chapman 55. Sheldon 69. EAC 59. Encyclopedia 1669.
Rarity 3.
Remarks: Sheldon mentioned a "straight line break" crossing the reverse of the original Hays coin, now in the ANS. Examination in December 1984 showed that the "break" is a planchet crack.
Apparently among those delivered December 16. Dan Trollanreported an example in his collection with the high denomination edge, ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR. (Letter to Mark Borckardt, April 28, 1997.)
