Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

III. Fourfold obverse clash marks with heavier reverse clash marks and rust. The crack through R is much stronger, extending across the wreath, through the lower edge of the inside leaves opposite (N}T, and across the stand of this T.

IV. Faint crack-like flaw across the neck. Equivalents: Maris 26, "Amatory Face" (1869 edition), "Amiable Face" (1870 edition). Frossard 16.1. Doughty 46. Hays 37. McGirlk 11B Ross 23-Q. Chapman 22. Sheldon 30. EAC 15. Encyclopedia 1660.

High Rarity 1.

Remarks: Maris probably changed the name in the interest of respectability. Later collectors renamed this variety "First Marred Field," to distinguish it from two later states, altered in the hair but still with the field chips, respectively numbers 13 and 25-28.

Probably about 24,000 struck from March 11-13.

Obverse 10. Drastically reground to remove clash marks and the neck flaw. Hollow places are visible in the hair behind the neck. 1 is now free of the hair. Several curl tips are lengthened and thickened. Repunching is visible at the left side of the upright of 4. The two field chips are larger.

Reverse G. Longest fraction bar in the series, heavy and extending well beyond 100. Large round knot. Incomplete leaves at O(N), (N)E, (N)T, and CA. Leaf below C(E) is repunched. Six berries on each branch with the top one on the left smallest. Base of T in CENT slants down minutely to the right.

Die states: I. Faint reverse clash marks.

II. Dies again reground to remove clash marks (probably a heavier set). The chips become more prominent.
