Doughty 34. Hays 19. McGirk 6C. Ross 13-L. Chapman 9. Sheldon 41. EAC 29. Encyclopedia 1668.
Rarity 3.
Remarks: The location of die cracks on states III-VII reflects the extra stress on the left reverse from vertical (axial) die misalignment.
This variety probably formed the majority of those delivered May 8.
In the ANS (ex G. Kraft, January 1923) is a state II coin with the edge blundered ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR. Dan Trollan reported an example with the edge reading ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR, in the collection of March Wells, formerly from the Robinson S. Brown, Jr. Collection (Superior Galleries 9/1986: 55) and re-appearing in the Superior Galleries sale of 2/1992, lot 639.
Edge letters hereafter through number 65 often are weak at bases of LL, though without changes in shape or spacing. This may reflect beveling of planchet edges and (or) weak uneven impressions. These sometimes also show an attenuated tail to (DOLLA)R and weaker, shorter leaf, perhaps the result of wear or damage to the bar bearing them.
