Obverse 13. Lowest lock is more delicate than on any other 1794 die. Narrow shoulder loop. Cheek is in rounded high relief as on number 8. LI and ERT were first punched too high, then corrected; RTY high. R, 1, and 9 each touch the border.

Die states: I. Perfect obverse die: no clash marks and no crack. Extremely rare.
II. Clash marks from the cap at I and D, from the hair in wreath, from the junction of hair and neck above N(E), and from the truncation below ES. Very rare.
III. Faint crack from the rim between 94 to the comer of 4 and to the bust. Very rare.
IV. The crack extends almost vertically through the, neck, hair, and serifs of E to the rim between ER. This begins faint and later becomes very heavy in the center. Faint bulge from the rim to lower part of the cap.
V. Heavy clash marks below the cap from leaves.
VI. Cracked from the rim through lower part of cap into the hair, at the site of the bulge of state N.
VII. Nearly straight crack in the lower hair above I, slanting down slightly to the right.

VIII. Arc crack from lower tip of cap through the curls, joining the crack of state VII, eventually extending to the shoulder loop.

Remarks: Discovered by Edouard Frossard in the Merritt collection in the winter of 1878-79. "Frossard variety."
