Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 27.

Reverse II. Right stem is short, extending less than halfway between the ribbon and final A. Seven berries on each branch with the top two outer berries on the left branch smallest. Leaf point left of O(N) supports a long drooping berry stem at its middle. Fraction bar is short and thin and the denominator is spaced 1 00 with the final zero high. I and E are above N, T, and D. A is above T-T.

Die states: 1. Obverse reground to remove clash marks with only partial success. Curl points are thinner, except the lowest. The crack through LIBE and the cap to the border is very faint. Clashed dentils through the fraction, ribbon, and UN. (Sheldon must have forgotten about this coin; Penny Whimsy, p. 122, merely recopies Early American Cents, pp. 122-3: "The marks of injury to the die [obverse state TII]. .. are present on all coins that I have seen.")

II. New set of clash marks from the hair in the central reverse.

III. Additional clash marks from the stem below the space between rs. Other clash marks are heavier. At least one die must have come loose in its die cup when the accident occurred.

IV. Cracked above TE(S) and from A(T) through the wreath to (I)T and through NI to the rim.

Rarity 4.

Remarks: These blanks are of normal weight with some slightly heavier. Two in the American Numismatic Society weigh 209.80 grains (13.59 grams) and 214.44 grains (13.89 grams). This does not justify Sheldon's claims that this variety comes on extra thick planchets: see introductory text preceding number 56.

Believed included in the delivery of August 14.
