Walter Breen

Obverse 25. Always with the crack of number 46, state IV, above. Bases of 94 are often weak.
Reverse CC Double outer leaf below NI, as in reverse BB. The left branch is broken at two berries left of the bow and the right branch is broken below M. Outer leaves below UN and ST are broken away, as is the right stem end. Two ribbon knots with the left ribbon end emanating fromthe lower and the right ribbon end from the higher. Six berries left and five right, all unusually large except for the fourth on the left branch. The top berry at right is partly merged in the wreath stem. Fraction bar has a notch just below the numerator, which almost touches it. Poorly spaced legend: TED ST lean to the right, D 5 are high, A(T) is much too high and tilted crazily to the left, M leans strongly to the right, ME are far apart, R is low. E leans well to the right of ON and ENT are successively higher.
Die states: I. As noted. Light double or triple clash marks in the usual places on both sides: below the chin, near the cap, and within the wreath.
II. Crack curves down through the hair to the shoulder. Later repolished to remove clash marks.
III. First crack is now heavy with a continuation from the nose to the rim at 2:30. New obverse clash marks below the cap and chin, and right of the nose.
Equivalents: Maris 9. Frossard 5.3. Doughty 29. Hays 13. McGirk 2A. Ross 8-G. Chapman 44. Sheldon 55. EAC 45. Encyclopedia 1668.
High Rarity 2.
Remarks: This reverse is similar to reverses BB and DD, sharing with both dies the double ribbon knot and misspaced legend, and with the former, the double outer leaf at IT. Attributed to Frederick Riche for reasons given at variety 37. Believed delivered between June 26 and July 8.
Usually unevenly struck, especially on the reverse.
Dentils are weak above LIBERTY and below the fraction.
Robinson S. Brown Jr. (1986 lot 74) had one with the edge blundered ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR. Walter Husak has a similar example in his collection. (Letter to Mark Borckardt, Apri128, 1997.) The American Numismatic Society has one with triple edge lettering.
New Netherlands, 50th sale, lot 954, was claimed to be from a perfect obverse die, struck before the last of variety 46. This coin later appeared as lot 5059 in Kagin's sale of the Van Cleave collection. Further examination of this coin may allow for revision of die states and possibly the emission order.
