Remarks: Usually identified at long range by the mounds. Probably over 60,000 were struck from January 21 to February 21.
A spectacular example with double edge letters was seen at the 1989 EAC convention. (For more information regarding this, and other edge blunders, see Dan TroUan, "Complete List of Known Lettered Edge Blunders on Early Large Cents," Penny-Wise, 1/15/1998, pp. 10-11.) Either this, or another, is in the collection of Dan Trollan with the edge reading ONE FORHUNDARE DOLLAFOAR (leaf) A ONDELLAHRUNDRE with a second leaf overlapping the last UN. Trollan also reported an example in the collection of Red Henry with the edge lettered ONE HUNDREDFOR A DOLLAR. (Letter to Mark Borckard.t, April 28, 1997.) A double struck example appeared in the 1975 EAC sale (lot 555). See "Oops!" chapter.
Maris called this the "Large Planchet" but it is unknown what he was comparing it to. Diameters are normally 18 to 18.5/16" (28.6-29.4 millimeters)
