Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 2.

Reverse A.

Edge: II. Point and stem of leaf after DOLLAR point up. See illustration on page 65.
Die states: II. As preceding.

III. Dies are again clashed and repolished. Some clash marks from the hair still show in the left wreath. Right ribbon is fragmented.

IV. Bulge from below cap to middle curl.

V. Bulge between ED and the left wreath. On later strikings, this bulge covers TED, eventually encroaching on the adjacent leaves and finally ITED.

Rarity 4.

Remarks: The earliest die states include some of the finest survivors, most likely saved as novelties by people who had not seen the 1793 Caps. Surfaces of high-grade survivors are occasionally prooflike, primarily because they were made on the new Taylor & Bailey blanks. The Garrett coin and at least a couple of others have been conjectured to be presentation strikings.
