Obverse 4.

Reverse E. Five berries left and four right. Outer leaf of triplet at ED is below the toe of E, as on reverse C, but readily distinguished from the latter by much greater distance of the leaf from F. c and T are below EN and the left pendant of this T is broken. Usually, or perhaps always, in a drastically reground state with incomplete bows and many leaves hollow or represented only by outlines or fragments.

Die states: I. Obverse as previous.

II. Crumbling or rust marks in the field close to the nose and lips.

Equivalents: Proskey 5. Doughty 76. Gilbert L.

McGirk 1B. Clapp-Newcomb K. Sheldon 86. EAC 7. Encyclopedia 168l.

Rarity 5.

Remarks: Reverse is usually weak. This partly accounts for Gilbert's seeing only 18 rather than 19 leaves on the right branch. Sheldon's epithet "office boy reverse" for this die, and his comments about its defective leaves, apply at least equally to state II of number 6.

Probably between 2,000 and 3,000 were struck.
