Obverse 18.

Reverse O. Type of 1797, small fraction. Five berries left and four right with no outer berry below A(M). Bases of TE are above 1-D and 5 is below T. 0 is below N and leans right, tops of NE about touch, tops of EN touch, and this N is above E. CENT is away from the bows.

Die states: I. Perfect obverse die without clash marks. II. Cracked as in number 28, state II.

Equivalents: Gilbert 18. McGirk 7B. Clapp-Newcomb 18. Sheldon NC-1. EAC 29. Encyclopedia 169l.

Rarity 6.

Remarks: Apparently struck between early and late impressions of number 28, state I. This short-lived reverse was put to press while the reverse of number 28 was out for grinding down to remove clashmarks.

If the obverse exists in the truly perfect state without clash marks, then this number may have preceded number 28. The Miller, Reynolds example has a double profile.

Usually, perhaps always, on concavo-convex blanks.
