Obverse 19.

Reverse U. Type of 1795. Three triplets on the left branch and two on the right, these flanking UN, ED, O(N), (N)T, and ER. Left leaf of the pair at c(E) overlaps the wreath stem.

Die states: 1. Obverse clashed as number 34, state IV. II. Extra clash marks from the dentils above ERTY and right.

Equivalents: Gilbert 34. McGirk 6F. Clapp-Newcomb 27. Sheldon 95. EAC 35. Encyclopedia 1690. See Remarks.

High Rarity 5. Just over 30 are currently known.

Remarks: Doughty's description of his number 86 is too vague for certainty, but nearer to this than to any other variety. Doughty worked from low-grade examples, and more than once confused obverses with the same date layout. (The Cents of the United States, New York, 1890.)

Some struck on concavo-convex blanks. This reverse closely resembles reverse V and was possibly made the same day.
