Obverse 18. Date spaced 1 7 96 with 6 leaning well to the right. Bases of ER touch.
Reverse N. Type of 1795. ONE CENT exceptionally far apart with CENT close to bows and spaced C ENT. Two triplets on the left branch, one on the right. These are all outside, flanking UN, ED and ICA. Three berries left and five right. The top left berry, between the triplet at ED and the wreath stem, is very small. Ribbons are unusually far from the fraction with a wide denominator well below the fraction bar.
Die states: I. Double clash marks before and behind the neck. May exist perfect, without clash marks.
II. Cracked from the bases of TY into the field at right. Later this crack extends through RIY, at first faint, becoming heavy.

III. Spur to right from the top of 9. At least six fold clash marks on the obverse and reverse, plainest before and behind the neck, at left and right of the wreath, and at the fraction. Cracked from the tops of BER to the rim, another faintly from the rim to the space between the lips. N. Shattered dies without rim breaks. At least seven sets of reverse clash marks which occurred when the reverse die was rotated.
V. Shattered obverse with cracks crossing in the right and especially lower right field. Reverse reground to remove clash marks. As a result, many leaves are now incomplete.
Reverse develops a new crack above ST ES and a heavy rim break at end of the right ribbon, extending almost to the top of the final A.
Equivalents: Proskey 17. Doughty 87. Gilbert 1. McGirk SA. Ross I-A. Clapp-Newcomb 1. Sheldon 92. EAC 28. Encyclopedia 1688.
High Rarity 3.
Remarks: Obverse is similar to dies 11, 12, and 14, probably part of the same batch. Sometimes shows double profile. Reverse is stylistically similar to reverse A of (1796 Liberty Cap) number 1.
Reverse often rotated 20° to 40° from the normal position. Sometimes on concave-convex blanks.
