Obverse 20. L high, bases of LI close, RT less close, IBER wider, and TY widest. ER lean right with the bases of ERT successively higher. Curved date, spaced 1 796 with the bases of 17 in line and the bases of 796 successively higher. In the date, 6 leans left and nearly touches the drapery. B is normally formed, unlike the preceding.
Reverse V. Type of 1795. Three triplets on the left branch with two on the right. These are at UN, ED, O(N), (N)E, and ER. Five berries left and four right with a berry right of the bow. Fraction bar is skewed left. E is below CNT, u is low, and T is above 5-A, free of A.

II. Obverse clash marks from the leaves above the knot and before the face and neck.

Remarks: This obverse was resurrected in late November or December 1797 for use on number 43.
Should any examples of this variety be found with the obverse showing clash marks from reverse die Z of number 43, then this variety would have been struck between states I and II of that number, altering the emission sequence presented here. Almost always weak around the double leaf at NT.
Struck on concavo-convex blanks.
