AU-55 With a planchet defect below N in CENT. Dorothy Paschal • Ed Hipps (Ed's Coin & Stamp Shop).

Obverse 4. Vertical striations at u and TY. (Editor's note: These striations might be a function of die state.) Dentils are weaker below the date and left.
Reverse D. Similar to reverse C. Four berries on each branch. Nine triplets with outer leaf of a triplet under the upright of E(D). Right leaf of a triplet below C(E), not to its left. Innermost leaf of the triplet below ME completely overlaps the stem and on worn specimens may show only as a thickening of the stem s is below T and TA are joined. Fraction bar is long, thin, away from the numerals, and skewed to the left, as is the denominator. Horizontal chip in the field below N(E) with others around ON.
Die states: I. Normal reverse.
II. Reverse drastically reground. Left stem end is broken away and the bows are incomplete. Inner leaf of the triplet at ED is incomplete, outer leaves of the triplets at RI and CA are mere fragments, and the right leaf of the pair below (N)T is only an outline. The triplets right of (N)E and below ME have fragmentary leaves. A crack or die scratch slants up through part of the left bow.
Equivalents: Proskey 4. Doughty 75. Gilbert G. McGirk 3B. Ross 2-D. Clapp-Newcomb G. Sheldon 85. EAC 6. Encyclopedia 1681.
Rarity 5.
Remarks: Usually weak at lower obverse and upper reverse, possibly from axially misaligned dies. Sheldon's comments about his number 86 (our number 7), though modified from Clapp-Newcomb, apply at least equally to state II of the present number.
Probably between 2,000 and 3,000 were struck.
An example from the Jack H. Robinson collection (lot 155) has a clip at K-9:30. See "Oops!" chapter.
