Obverse 12. Similar to the preceding, but without repunching on u or crack joining 96. Base of L is below I and I B are far apart. Die scratch slants up from toe of L to upper shaft of I. A die chip before the throat is about midway between the bust and chin.

Reverse H.

Die states: 1. Perfect obverse die. Reverse before regrinding. Reported by Sheldon who said he saw only one.

Currently unseen.

II. Reverse drastically reground as in number 12, state V; few tiny chips below E(D), hence struck before number 16, state VI.

III. Cracked from the rim through right base of I to the hair.

Iv. Cracks through 96 and from top of 6 to the drapery.

V. Cracked from the rim. opposite mouth to edge of the jaw, at first very faint, later stronger. An additional crack from the rim to bust point.

VI. Cracked from the rim to end of the drapery. Equivalents: Proskey 21? Doughty 91. Gilbert 29. McGirk 12J. Clapp-Newcomb 24. Sheldon 111. EAC 17. Encyclopedia 1687.

Low Rarity 5.

Remarks: Worn examples are often confused with number 16, which see.

McGirk 13A describes a variety with this reverse combined with an obverse cracked from the rim between 79 to the shoulder. This was later in the A. C. Gies collection. (Stack's fixed price list, January 1942, lot 160, "Good," $25.)

This is since untraced and may actually be number 14, which see.
