Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 9. Date is less wide with 6 leaning more to the right than other digits. I B E are far apart and lean right so that the base of I is below B, and the base of E is well below R.

Reverse H.

Die states: I. Perfect obverse die. Reverse was struck before regrinding. No clash marks.
II. Clash mark from the bust through O(F).

III. Light crack from the rim to the drapery right of 7. New crack from the rim left of L across the head to the right rim.

IV. First crack of state III extends through the drapery to neck and later to the face. Other light cracks from the rim to left pendant and base of T, to the brow, and from below the tip of 1 to the crossbar of 7.

V. A branch of the second crack extends down through the brow, nose, and field to the rim opposite bust point. Another branch in the hair joins it to the first crack.

VI. Reverse drastically reground, as in number 12, state V.

Equivalents: Gilbert 25, 8. McGirk 12H. Ross 8-E.

Clapp-Newcomb 23. Sheldon 106. EAC 14. Encyclopedia 1684.

Rarity 5.

Remarks: Gilbert described his number 8 as having the reverse of his 7 (our reverse M, another Type of 1794 die); this was evidently a typographical error for "Reverse 6," which would have been correct. His plate coin for the obverse of his number 8 and reverse 6 is the same one pictured in Early American Cents for 5-106. Others called this variety "Gilbert 59."
