Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 4. Medium evenly spaced date: broken B. No curl point near B. Top of 1 and corner of 7 touch the device. Heavy triangular field chip before the throat.

Reverse B. Regular type (16 leaves on the left branch and 19 right with a double right terminal leaf) from now on. Small fraction. The lowest outer right leaf is fragmented.

Edge: Beaded (II) or plain (III or IV).

Die states: I. Clash marks from OF below the drapery. Rust pits and radial roughness in the right obverse field. Faint bulge behind the lowest curls. Reverse rust at the fraction and at MERlC. McGirk 3A.

II. Cracked from the rim through (M)E to leaf. McGirk3B.

III. Faint crack through 97. Rust right of date. Bulge advances behind the lowest curls and extends below 9.

IV. Reverse has a second crack from the rim to (M)E. All bulges are advanced.

V. A piece has fallen out of the die between the two cracks at ME. The letters NE and the adjacent wreath are obliterated by a bulge. Usually seen weakly struck at the left obverse and left reverse, probably the result of axially mis-aligned dies.
