Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 11. IBE about even. Sharp angular wave of hair below the upright of E. On all other dies this wave is gently rounded.

Reverse L.

Edge: Plain.

Die states: 1. Perfect obverse. Reverse cracked as number 16, state IV.

II. Faint bulges near the rim opposite. the chin and above end of the drapery with another behind the ribbon.

Scattered faint rust marks.

III. The obverse is cracked from the rim opposite the knot, extending into the field before turning downward; Faint crack through TY. Rare, as are all later states.

IV. Advanced obverse rust and vertical scaling. Cracked from the left pendant of T(ES) to the right foot of adjacent A. Reverse crack of state I continues through the top of C(A). Later, these cracks become heavier.

V. Severe vertical failure in the right obverse field adjacent to the border, from Y, across end of the drapery to the lower right rim. The crack of state III becomes heavy and extends nearly to the hair above the second lowest curl where it blends into the vertical scaling on the die, giving the impression of a complete rim-to-rim break, K-10 to K-7. Reverse has advanced buckling at OF A. Extremely rare.

VI. Buckling extends through the drapery into the field near border, weakening the lower parts of 97. Bulge at LIB. Cracked from the rim between 17 to right side of 1 above center. Reverse buckling obliterates OF A and adjacent leaves. Buckling weakens TES and much of the left branch.

Equivalents: McGirk 11B. Clapp-Newcomb 10. Sheldon 127. EAC 8. Encyclopedia 1711.

High Rarity 4.

Remarks: Discovered by Dr. Sheldon in 1931. David Proskey described the crack of state III as a "subvariety" of his number 16.

Apparently he had confused the two obverse dies.

The Jack Robinson coin, called "perfect dies," is parous at MERI, obscuring the cracks.

One example is known double struck with the first strike off-center. See "Oops!" chapter.
