Die states: I. Perfect obverse. Reverse with a faint trace of buckling at OF.
II. Obverse has faint bulges behind the ribbon and from below 7 to end of the drapery. Reverse has a faint crack from the rim above F through AMER. Faint clash marks from the drapery at 5 0 and from the dentils above F AM; these fade.
III. Crack from rim below 1 behind the lowest curl into left field, eventually to rim opposite the knot.
IV. Buckling behind ribbons, below ribbons, and from final 7 to end of the drapery and the rim above.
V. Cracked from y to the field opposite the chin.
VI. Another bulge under 97. The obverse bulge in the left field becomes heavier as does the reverse bulge at OF. Cracked from the tops of STATES to the rim above o. Crack of state IT is plainer and extends to the rim above R, and another parallel crack appears above it through the tops of MER.
VII. Dentils clashed above S(T) with other flaws at this 5.
VIII. Faint crack from rim to the left upright of N(I).

IX. Severe bulge at TED and adjacent leaves. The bulge at 97 extends across the lower half of the bust to the field above and to the rim at the bust tip.

Rarity 1. Less common than number 21.
Remarks: Low-grade specimens have often been mistaken for number 15, which see.
Ken Lucas reported a double struck example. Halpern: 141 has a double profile. An example off-center at K-10 appeared in the 1975 EAC sale, lot 561. The same sale had a triple struck example, lot 562. The Ruby sale (lot 668) had a double struck example with the first strike 5% off-center and rotated about 15° from the second strike.
