VG-7 Carl Wattenbarger (Silver ''D'' Auction Co.) 10/1968: 71 as "5-129 Fine-V.F." $20 • Jules Reiver. Obverse and reverse illustrated in Noyes. Reiver inspected the coin prior to the auction but misattributed it. After purchasing it and inspecting the coin closer, he discovered it to be a new variety.

The only example known.

Obverse 21. Style II letters with curved tail to R. 7 is embedded in the drapery.

Reverse R. Stemless.

Edge: Plain, usually IV late, though the Breen-Paschal coin looks more like one on a Boulton blank (III).

Die states: 1. Obverse has faint double clash marks before the throat. Faint reverse crack in field right of D.

II. Faint clash marks above c(E) and left; others at the berry right of (N)E.

III. Additional faint clash marks through the ribbons and numerator. All of these clash marks fade or are polished away.

Equivalents: Proskey 6. Doughty 97. McGirk 4A.

Clapp-Newcomb 27. Sheldon 143. EAC 31. Encyclopedia 1714.

Low Rarity 5.

Remarks: At least one example (state III, all clash marks faded) shows axial die misalignment: weakest at end of drapery and OF. If this condition remained undetected, one would expect reverse die failure around UNIT. R. Tettenhorst has an example with obverse brockage. See "Oops!" chapter.
