The die chips probably occurred at hardening. Clapp referred to this and other dies with this problem as "poor steel."

Reverse E. Six berries left and five right. Part of an extra S below S(T). Bows are hollow and the left wreath stem is thin.
Edge: Beaded (II) or plain (III). Plain Edge coins are from Boulton blanks.
Die states: 1. Rust develops in the right obverse field.
No bulges, cracks, or clash marks.
II. Reverse is bulged, beginning at ICA.
III. Cracked from the rim to right ribbon end.
IV. At least 13 sets of clash marks. Cracks from A(M) to wreath and from the rim through R to a leaf tip, at first faint. The crack of state III now extends, at first faintly, through CA.
V. Crack from the rim to back of c(A). Bulge of state II extends to RICA.
VI. Bulge at UN. The bulge of state II weakens, and later obliterates, both RICA and the adjacent cracks.
