Die states: I. Obverse as number 24, state II.

II. Obverse has a small piece broken off the die between the two cracks. Another crack forms a short extra tail to R, below middle, between upright and the real tail. Double clash marks.

III. Chips behind the head at base of the two cracks; others in the forelock and below' tail of R. Reverse has faint four fold clash marks.

IV. The state II break behind the head is now solid to the rim. Defects in the right obverse field. Reverse with at least eight sets of clash marks. Most leaves are weakened with some rust pits.

V. Faint vertical crack in right obverse field. Faint chip hangs from tip of nose. As number 27, state II.

Rarity 2.

Remarks: An earlier state may exist with normal ribbons. The peculiarities of the fraction will identify this reverse.

The last of these were struck after number 26.

The Jack H. Robinson coin (lot 255) shows two light curved clips at K-8 and K-10. John D. Wright has a double struck example, from the Dupont collection, with the two impressions rotated about 150 degrees.
