Walter Breen

Obverse 9. Always bulged at end of the drapery. Reverse L. E of ONE is vertically above T of CENT. Wide fraction with a short bar only covering 00. Upper serif of D is prolonged.
Edge: Plain. The Robinson S. Brown, Jr. example has traces of diagonal reeding (edge V, as 1798). Others may show similar reeding.
Die states: I. As noted.
II. Obverse has a heavy bulge at the date and three more sets of clash marks at the throat.
III. Bulges left of L and behind the ribbon. At least six more sets of clash marks, some at the dentils.
Equivalents: Clapp-Newcomb 8. Sheldon 125. EAC 6. Encyclopedia 1711.
Rarity 5.
Remarks: Usually in low grades and often porous. Advanced die failures often make this variety difficult to grade.
Examples of number 22 have often been mistaken for this. A glance at the ES in ONE CENT should readily settle any doubts. John S. Ashby illustrated a double struck example in Penny-Wise.P (No. 92, 9/15/1982, p. 237.)
