Obverse 1.

Reverse B. Fraction skewed left with the numerator partly above the space between 00, as in 1797 reverses M, N, and T (numbers 18, 19-20, 30, and 32). Short fraction bar with a die scratch joining the right ribbon, as in 1797 reverses M, T, and O. Die chip above numerator like the dot above an I; at first weak, later more obvious. The leaf at C{E) is fragmented.

Edge: Reeded edge (RE) and plain edge (PE).

Die states: I. Perfect reverse; no buckling at OF, the die chip weak. Clapp 1-B.

II. Traces of buckling at OF only.

III. Clash marks from the drapery at 5 OF A.

IV. Faint crack in the dentils above OF. The base of O(N) is broken with crumbling below it. The buckling advances, eventually affecting ED, OF A, ONE CENT, and much of the wreath. Clapp 1-Bb.

V. Obverse die sinking between the neck and rim about half-way from point of the bust to the chin. Clapp 1b-Bb.

Equivalents: Doughty 115. Proskey 6. McGirk 3C1 (PE) and 3C2 (RE). Clapp 2. Sheldon 145. EAC 2. Ency. 1715.

Rarity 3.

Remarks: Coltman blanks, like number 1 although examples have been reported on smooth brown planchets.

This reverse is similar to 1797 reverse M and was probably made immediately before or after the latter.

Ken Lucas has a rotated double strike with the date reading 179898. Several other rotated double strikes are known, probably struck about the same time and representing the same failure in the ejection mechanism. John Ashby, Jr. illustrated a flipover double strike. (Penny-Wise, no. 90,5/15/1982, p. 119.)
