Obverse 5. Wide date with large 8, its top overlapping the drapery. ER are closely spaced and Y is low.

Reverse G. Style I lettering. Long fraction bar skewed to the right; 100 skewed to the left. D is slightly high. AM are well apart with A low. Tail of R is below I.

Edge: Usually with plain edge (PE) although sometimes with reeded edge (RE).

Die states: I. Buckling beginning in the right obverse field and on the reverse at ED, AME, and some leaves. Light fivefold clash marks. Clapp 10-Ib.

II. At least six sets of heavier reverse clash marks; all of LIBERTY shows under u 100 CA. Bulges at TED and AME are heavier, later extending behind I(TED) and R. "Clapp 0-Ic" (not in his book).

III. Obverse radially cracked from the-rim to upper edge of bust. Bulges develop in the right obverse field. Clapp 10b-Ic.

Rarity 4.

Remarks: Discovered by Dr. Charles E. McGirk. Some few are on unusually highly polished blanks (possibly Boulton planchets left over from 1797). Others are on Coltman blanks.
