Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 25.

Reverse Z. Type of 1799. E(D) is wide and perfect. E(S) is narrow and lacking its left base. E(R) has its left top serif prolonged with its crosslet joining top. c(E) has a flat top and a spine for a serif. No center dot. Usually recognized by the rim break of state II.

Edge: Plain edge (PE) and single-flange edge (SFE). Die states: I. Obverse as number 35, state V. Reverse perfect without the rim break above U. Reported: see state II.

II. Obverse clash marks ground off. Reverse has a narrow rim break above u, extending to below the left ribbon end; this may not show if the left border is too narrow in that area or the coin is not strongly struck at the left. Crack slants down to right in wreath left of O(N) illustrated in Penny Whimsy as "Yvd."

III. Obverse with small rim break at the lower left. Reverse rim break covering top of u, extending above part of the N and to below 1(00). Clapp 27c- Yb.

IV. Cracked from the rim through right side of A(T) to top left leaf, later approaching M.

V. Branch cracks around TIS to top leaf with another joining the terminal leaves. Clapp 27c-Yc.

VI. Crack of state IV extends to M. Another from rim to curve of c(A) and leaf. Clapp 27c-Yd.

Equivalents: McGirk 29A. Clapp 35. Sheldon 175. EAC 36. Encyclopedia 1732. Rarity 4.
