Walter Breen

Obverse 16. LIB are very close with IB leaning right.
Usually identified by the bulges at end of the drapery and at 8.
Reverse O. Type of 1799 (see text before Cherrypicker's Guide II). E(S) and F have short lower left serifs. Normal blunt serif to dE). No center dot. Horizontal part of the right ribbon is much attenuated, the right bow is open at right, and the lowest leaf on the right is fragmented.
Edge: Reeded edge (RE), plain edge (PE), and double-flange edge (DFE).

Die states: I. Faint traces of buckling at right end of the drapery. Clapp 20-Q.
II. Bulge at 8 and right; minute die chips before the face, most prominently in a diagonal line from the field opposite nose down to the bust. Clapp 20b-Q.
III, Heavy bulges through the drapery and lowest curl. Clapp 20c-Q.
IV. Heavy clashmarks in the right obverse field from AME.
V. Extra clash marks from AMERICA.
VI. Cracked from rim left of L into field.
VII. Bulge of state III now obliterates 179. Equivalents: Doughty 123. Proskey 15. McGirk 12A. Clapp 24. Sheldon 164. EAC 11. Encyclopedia 1723.
Low Rarity 4.
Remarks: Reverse rotated 180 degrees from normal alignment in earliest states, later corrected. As with others where the recorded rotation is 180 degrees, this apparently represents mistaken setting of the die in the press, not a cylinder break.
