Obverse 4. 1798/7, closely spaced overdate. Both points of 7 show atop 8 and the right top touches the drapery; shaft of 7 shows as a point at inner base. IB are close.

Reverse E. Longer fraction bar than number 7. Edge: Usually with reeded edge (RE), although sometimes with plain edge (PE).

Die states: I. Reverse cracked from the rim between AM to the wreath stem, ending at base of the top right leaf pair.

II. Reverse clash marks from drapery at OF. A bulge develops at ER(I).

III. Clapp mentions a branch crack above top of M and two more from rim to R and adjacent I. Clapp 7-Fc.

IV. Buckling through FAME and in center of wreath. Equivalents: Doughty 111. Proskey 2. McGirk 2A. Clapp 8. Sheldon 150. EAC 6. Encyclopedia 1717.

Rarity 5.

Remarks: John Wright described a specimen said to have severe die crumbling from tip of the nose. (Penny-Wise, no. 11, 3/15/1969, p. 71.) This remains unverified.
