Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 1. Style I letters. Closest date with large 8.

Reverse A. Style I letters. Long heavy fraction bar ending in a point at the right. Final A is far from the ribbon-farther than any other die of the year. Top right leaf is midway between 5 and o.

Edge: Usually with reeded edge (RE) although sometimes with plain edge (PE).

Die states: I. Reverse buckled in a straight line from TA through NE to the wreath, faint on the earliest strikes. Clapp I-A.

III. Reverse cracked from the rim through left ribbon and stem to (C)E, later extending to the right foot of N(E). Buckling extends to ER. Cracked from the rim between 5 0 through the tops of OF, and to the rim above A. Mentioned by Clapp as an intermediate state.

IV. Cracked from the rim through TA; another through ES continues below OF to A. Clapp 1-Ab. In Clapp 1-Ac, the buckle "has developed into a crack which crosses the stem and passes on to top of O in ONE."

Equivalents: McGirk 23A. Clapp 1. Sheldon 144. EAC

1. Encyclopedia 1715.

Low Rarity 6.

Remarks: Discovered by Dr. Charles E. McGirk.

The reverse is quite similar to reverse P of 1797 numbers 23-24, and was probably made immediately before or after the latter, though the coins may have been struck weeks later.

Usually found in low grades, on porous Coltman planchets.
