Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 3. Head of 1799 ("Style II hair") from now on. Overdate, 1800/179 with trace of an uncertain digit in the final O. The original date was widely spaced with 18 close, similar to the 1799/8. Serif and comer of 7 show distinctly above the 8. BERT spaced apart, especially ER. E is repunched with a heavy notched left foot. Base of T is high. Tops of RTY are usually weak.

Reverse E. Long fraction bar slants down to the right Final 0 is high. Left foot of E(S) is missing. Bases of ME are joined. E(R) is repunched, plainest at the right upright. See Die states.

Edge: Single-flange edge (SFE) and plain edge (PE).

Die states: 1. Faint rust pits around the final O. Reverse flaws at center of the top right upright of u. Others in the left bow and below O(F), slanting up to the right.

II. Arc crack from the rim to IC, fraction bar, and 1 of the deominator.

III. Branch crack from the crack of state II to the tail of R IV. Second branch crack from the crack of state

II to base of the left upright of R. The original crack is heavier. Rim break on IC and another between (C)A and the space below the right ribbon.
