Walter Breen

Obverse 15. Closest date (other than overdates) with the final 0 far from the drapery. The date is often weak. IB lean right with the base of I below B, RT are slightly high, and the left base of Y is broken. Comma-shaped chip from the rim between BE, at first faint.
Reverse S.
Edge: Plain edge (PE).
Die states: I. Perfect obverse. Reverse as number 23 state VI. The rim break extends from below the first 0 to above C(A), however, centering may not always permit this to show.
II. Clash marks from IC right of Y and from the leaves above the ribbon and below the chin.
III. Additional heavier obverse clash marks from RICA with the final A at Y.
IV. Die progressively failing at TY. Cracked from the rim through left top of E and down through the base of R. Reverse die failing at and below ERI.
V. The crack of state IV extends from ER to the fore-lock, right field, and eventually the right rim. Buckling above TY is severe.
VI. Cracked from the rim through tops of AM. VII. Rim break above AME.
VIII. The rim break touches A and covers the top of M. Another rim break occurs above the space between IC.
Equivalents: Proskey 17. Doughty 155. McGirk 4A. Ross 19:15-L. Clapp-Newcomb 23. Sheldon 210. EAC 21. Encyclopedia 1737.
High Rarity 5.
Remarks: The pattern of breaks is from axial misalignment: weakest at the lower left obverse and upper left reverse. Lowest curl and STA are normally weak and the date is often weak.
This was the rarest 1800 variety known to Doughty.
Usually found in low grades. John P. Kennedy illustrated one graded EF in II A Rare Variety of 1800 Cent. (Numismatist, August 1928, p. 462, with Clapp's description; Lapp & Silberman, p. 383.) The illustration is not clear enough to tell if this is the piece pictured in Penny Whimsy.
