Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 9.

Reverse O. Stemless leaves left of O(N) and below (N)T. S(T) is low. Tiny lump atop the crossbar of (C)E. Die chip above the right upright of N(E). The stemless leaves, chips, and lumps may not be discernible on late states with the central bulge, but the bulge is diagnostic.

Edge: Single-flange edge (SFE).

Die states: I. Cracked as in number 16, state II. A faint bulge begins right of the face. Faint bulges begin at NE and ENT. Very rare.

II. Rust around the date. Bulge left of the lower curls is heavy and the right bulge extends nearly to Y. Another crack from the rim to the lowest curl crosses the vertical branch crack. Reverse clash mark from drapery and in the wreath. Very rare.

III. Obverse and reverse bulges of state I are plain. Stemless leaves are still discernible.

IV. Bulge obliterates central details from bases of ED ST to the lowest right leaves, including the stemless leaves.

V. Another faint vertical crack left of the branch crack of number 16 state II. Reverse cracked from rim to pendant and right foot of E(R). Bulge obliterates ST.

VI. Short heavy crack down to the left from 1(8). Reverse bulge obliterates STA, eventually affecting TES, AME, and most of the wreath.
