Obverse 7. Bald space in the hair below BE. BERTY are spaced well apart with ER distant. Left base of y is gone. Instantly identified by the die chips at date, the most prominent making the first 0 resemble a Q: "Q variety," or "1800." All seen to date show a V-shaped break at IB.
Reverse J.
Edge: Plain edge (PE).
Die states: I. As noted. The break at IB becomes heavy, eventually reaching the hair.
II. Chips or breaks below the obverse ribbons. Clash marks from reverse dentils below the date and left. Reverse clash marks from 180 above TES and from the drapery at TATES.

III. Nearly horizontal cracks across the upper part of the hair and from the hair to 8. Rust pits are found in the hair, below the ribbons, on the neck, and in the upper reverse field near TES.
IV.Rim break above AT.

Remarks: The Van Cleave coin (state II) has a double profile phenomenon on both sides.
Formerly often confused with number 20 because of the pattern of die chips at the date. The IB break on this variety and the spiked C(E) on number 20 provide instant identification.
