Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 17. LI are close, base of T is below R, and Y is lower still, with its left base broken. Large bald spot in the hair above 1. Field chip ("period") midway between the throat and rim with another (smaller) midway be-tween the first chip and the throat. Usually identified by the horizontal crack of state II.

Reverse T.

Edge: Plain edge (PE).

Die states: I. Perfect dies. Rare.

II. Horizontal crack leftwards from the hair above the third from lowest curl, at first short and faint, later gradually extending toward the rim, but not touching the dentils. Clash marks from the leaves near the ribbons and below the chin, and from RIC right of Y. Die fails at tops of TY. Reverse crack develops from the center of I through the bases of CA. Over 90% of survivors are in this state.

III. At least four more sets of clash marks: from leaves before the face, from the drapery at S 0, and from the head near the fraction. The reverse crack extends to R and the right ribbon end, later to the final O. Another crack develops through bases of the fraction, eventually reaching u. Rare.

Equivalents: Clapp-Newcomb 18. Sheldon 205. EAC 15. Encyclopedia 1737.

Low Rarity 4.

Remarks: State III coins have been confused with number 27: the reverse cracks are very similar.
