Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 16. L is low, LI are close, and Y is low. Spacing between digits is successively wider. This obverse is usually recognized by the pattern of clash marks.

Reverse T. ME are repunched, plainest at top of the left upright and inner right upright of M, and at the right top of Ej in later states the recutting fades. F is heavy and apparently recut. Similar to reverse U, but the berry below C has its stem almost vertical (slanting down minutely to the left), whereas in reverse U, this berry has a heavier stem slanting down to the right and F is normal. Similar to reverse H, but the berry right of (N)T is of normal size (tiny and weak on reverse H).

Edge: Plain edge (PE). Die states: I. Perfect dies.

II. Obverse is beginning to fail at RTY and right.

III. Clash marks from the dentils through BER and above TY, and from the tops of ERIC in the upper right field.

IV. Cracked in the field right of Y. At least seven new sets of clash marks, notably from IC above the crack.

V. Clash marks from the drapery. Crack joins bases of so.

VI. Additional clash marks before the face. Advancing failure at the right rim with the dentils blurred.

VII. Additional clash marks from RIC in the right field and from ribbons, stems, fraction, etc., below BERTY. Nar-row rim break before the face.

VIII. Heavy wedge-shaped rim break right of the face, touching the clash marks from ic,

Remarks: Clapp described this reverse as a twin to reverse H of number 9. The differences outweigh the resemblances.
