Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 11. LI are very close, E leans right, R is high, and the left base of y is broken. Hair above 1 is weaker than usual but does not quite qualify as a bald spot.

Reverse R. Spike points to the right from the inner curve of C(E). Berry right of (N)E is practically stemless.

Edge: Plain edge (PE) and single-flange edge (SFE). Die states: I. Comma-shaped chip in the right obverse field just over half the distance from the throat to the rim. Scattered rust pits at 00 of the date. Reverse has scattered rust pits near STAT.

II. Rust pits on the bust and drapery. Reverse has a faint clash mark at the berry right of (N)E with additional rust pits in the fields.

III. Dies reground to remove clash marks: the shoulder loop is faint and the hair is incomplete. Gash marks from the dentils above ERTY, from 00 of the fraction at E, and from part of CA at TY. Rust pit ("horn") on upper bridge of the nose. Extended chips at 00 of the date. Reverse has a die chip like a short spine left from the left bow.

IV. Cracked across the upper hair to the brow, below TY, and to the right rim. Advanced reverse rust.

V. Cracked from the left rim to hair grazing top of the knot.

VI. Buckling advances and nearly obliterates ERTY. Equivalents: McGirk 4M. Ross 18:14-0. Clapp-Newcomb 25. EAC 22. Sheldon 212. Encyclopedia 1737.

Rarity 3.

Remarks: Independently discovered by McGirk and Ross. Ross confused this with Doughty 154 (number 21).

Formerly often confused with number 12 because of the pattern of die chips around the date. A state with heavily clashed dies may exist between our states II and III.
