Obverse 9. Border is normally narrow at the upper left.
Reverse M. Spiny serif to C(E). Left bases of E(S) and F are vestigial or missing. Final 0 is high. Stem of the outer berry below M is unusually long.
Edge: Plain edge (PE). This variety may exist with single-flange edge (SFE).
Die states: I. Obverse repolished to efface the clash marks of number 14 state VIII. Zeroes are more defective. The chips in the right field are extremely faint and shadowy. Very rare.
II. Bulge develops at D STA.
III. The chips slanting up to the right in the right obverse field are once again clear. Reverse has about eight sets of clash marks from the drapery at OF. Parallel die flaws, mostly through the fraction.
IV. Crack beginning at the left rim, pointing to the hair, and gradually lengthening. Reverse chip above E(R). Cracks: from stem end to left base of U, from right base of N to leaf tip, joining tops of ED, joining bases of ED, in I the dentils above ST and ES (centering may not permit these to show), diagonally up through TES, through the tops of F A, in dentils above E(R) slanting down through this E to the adjacent leaves and ribbon, and from the rim through the final 0 and ribbon, just missing the stem end. Narrow rim break above AT.
V. Bulges gradually develop left of the lower curls and right of the drapery. Cracked just below the tops of OF to the right, heavy within 0 and F
VI. Chip from die between OF along the crack.
VII. Heavy break through OF and far to the right. McGirk 4I2, Ross 22.
VIII. Obverse cracks prominent from the lower left rim nearly to the third curl from the bottom.
IX. Obverse crack reaches the third curl from the bottom, with an almost vertical branch nearly to the ribbon end. Reverse has severe bulges at D STA, OF, and RIC.
