Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 3.

Reverse F. Double fraction bar, the upper one very thin. Spine from berry at E(D).

Die states: 1. Minute lump on forelock just above its junction with the brow. No reverse crack. Newcomb 4d-F.

II. Swelling begins at end of the drapery. Reverse crack from the rim through tops of MERI, at first very faint, later plain. Newcomb 4d-Fb.

III. Branch crack, from rim between ER; crack very heavy from (R)I to rim; the whole configuration is now a retained cud. Very rare.

Equivalents: McGirk 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E. Newcomb 6. Sheldon 248. EAC 6. Encyclopedia 1754.

Rarity 4.

Remarks: Discovered by Dr. Charles McGirk. Examples of state III have been seen with the retained cud both below the surface of the field and above. Apparently the two pieces were loose and about to fall out of the die.

Earlier states are usually weak at ED and OF. State III shows axial misalignment: weak areas are at the lower left obverse and STA.

A later state probably exists with a rim break on MERI.
