Die states: 1. Perfect obverse die. So rare as to be controversial; most specimens reported have been in low grades.

II. Long die defect or crack slants down to the right from the field opposite the neck, down through the bust, to the lowest drapery fold. Newcomb 14b-P.

III Reverse arc crack from the rim down through STA and up through top of (A)T to the rim between TE. On earlier strikes this crack is thin, later it is thick and heavy.

Extremely rare. "Newcomb 14b-Pb."

Probably exists with a rim break on STATE. Equivalents:

Ross 6:4-F. Newcomb 20. Sheldon 262. EAC 21. Encyclopedia 1754.

Low Rarity 4.

Remarks: Usually found in low grades.

Newcomb had rated it "Very rare." In Early American Cents, Sheldon said he had only seen eight or nine, in Penny Whimsy the total was up to 18. Presently, one collector has a hoard of at least 76 specimens, mostly Fine or below.
