Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 3. LI nearly touch. Base of upright of R almost touches the highest wave of the hair. Minute die chip below I. Broken Y, its top above that of T.

Reverse C. Fraction 1/000, left stem elongated. Same as reverse L of 1801 number 17.

Die states: 1. Perfect obverse with no clash marks and no flaking. Reverse cracked from the rim to curve of D. Faint clash marks from curls at STA, from drapery at ATFS 0, and from hair within the wreath, as in 1801 number 17 state III.

II. Rust on the bust above drapery. Slight scaling develops in the left and right obverse fields, gradually increasing in area and intensity. Reverse crack through D is heavier and extends to the wreath. Oashmarks from curls at STA and from hair within the wreath, as in 1801 number 17 state VI. Scaling begins in the field between D 5, at first faint, later extending into STA. Newcomb 3-Cb.

III. The crack through D continues through (N)E and the wreath, eventually reaching the rim between F A. Newcomb 3-Cc.

IV. Cracked from the rim through the right pendant of (s)T, to the top two left leaves, top right double leaf, triple leaf, and O(F) to the rim. McGirk IB. Newcomb 3-Cd. Rare.

V. At least six sets of blurry clash marks.

VI. Severe bulge nearly obliterates TES. Equivalents: Proskey 1. Doughty 164. McGirk 1A, 1B. Ross I-A. Newcomb 6. Sheldon 228. EAC 4. Encyclopedia 1745.

Rarity 2.

Remarks: State I was apparently struck between states III and IV of 1801 number 17. The 1802 obverse was then laid aside and the 1801 obverse sent back to press. Newcomb's 3-Cd encompasses states IV, V, and VI combined.
