Reverse G. Five berries left and four right with none opposite (N)E. Repunched M.

Die states: I. Additional heavy clash marks from leaves below the chin and from dentils through BERT. Cracked from the base of N through the ribbon, left end of the fraction bar, and to the final O. Another from middle of the fraction bar to the right ribbon, in later states extending to (c)A.

II. Cracked from UN to the left ribbon, just below the state I crack, and from the rim through the right top of E, left base of adjacent R, through wreath down to right ribbon, and joining the second crack of state 1. Cracked from the rim to the right ribbon end. Newcomb 11c-Jb.

III. Crack from tops of STATES.

IV. Heavy obverse clash marks from CA at and right of TY; additional dentil clashes.

V. Narrow rim break above STATES. Date weak directly opposite break.

Low Rarity 4.

Remarks: Discovered by Dr. Charles E. McGirk. His 16A is supposedly a perfect die specimen (untraced); his 17 A is our state II, described from one in the collection of J. A. Walker.

This variety may exist with a rim break on STATES, developed from the crack.
