Obverse 1. In the date, 1 touches the hair above. Spacing of LIBERTY increases from left to right. R and T are unusually far apart, while T and Y lean left and are successively below R at their bases.
Reverse A. Die scratch extends from left end of the fraction bar almost to the left ribbon. Point of the highest leaf is between s o. All NS show repunching on the lower side of the diagonal. E(S) is above adjacent T and leans right; final s is higher still and tilts crazily to the right.
Die states: I. Perfect dies without clashed dentils right of the date. Extremely rare.
II. At least four partly blurred lines of clash marks from dentils in the field right of the date. Reverse has rotated clash marks from the drapery right of the top of (E)S.
III. Cracks through tops of UN and from base of the final 5 through OF. Obverse has at least six extra sets of clash marks near the ribbon and below the chin. Additional clashed dentils right of date. Several additional clash marks from the drapery near ES OF. Newcomb 1-Ab.

IV. Narrow rim break below 802. Centering or imperfect striking at the lower border may prevent this from showing. Newcomb 1b-Ab.
V. Rim crumbling before the throat. Rim break is heavier, extending beyond the base of 2. Most of the clashed dentils right of the date have been polished off the die. The shoulder loop is weak.
VI. Second reverse crack of state III is continuous from border over T(E), through ES, base of 0, and upper left serif of F, with the entire area above a retained cud.
VII. Immense rim break obliterates most of E(S), all of final S, almost all of 0, and covers almost all the space between S O. Extremely rare. Discovered in 1957.

Rarity 2.
Remarks: Often found on rough planchets with considerable mottling: these may have been affected by salt spray or bilgewater enroute from England. Similar blanks occur on number 6.
The Hesslein-ANS state II coin has a double profile.
