Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 8. Large E with its base low. T corrected from an erroneous Y. Arms of yare visible on both sides of the upright of T. Die scratch, or defect, from the rim into the field below 1.

Reverse H. Long fraction bar almost joins both ribbons. Die chip hangs from end of the right ribbon; another from the right pendant of (N)T.

Die states: I. Perfect dies with no clash marks or visible rim breaks.

II. Clash marks from misplaced leaves between tops of TY and rim, at first multiple, later fading. Clash marks from other leaves behind the head and before the chin. Tiny rim break involves three dentils below 18, not reaching tops of the dentils; centering may not permit these to show. Reverse has dash marks from dentils in the field between the wreath and AMERICA. Newcomb 7b-F.

III. Reverse has a faint crack from the rim above A(T) to the top of (S)T. Clash marks from the drapery below TES to the center of o.

IV. Cracked from the rim between S 0 to the tops of OF. Cracked from the rim above A(M) to the left top of M. The state III crack is plainer. Newcomb 7b-Fb.

V. The obverse clash marks are much weaker. The rim break below 18 is slightly larger, involving five dentils, but is still confined to the height of the dentils. Reverse has at least six sets of clash marks from the drapery near F. The second crack of state IV now joins the tops of AMERICA.

VI. Obverse reground to remove clash marks, blurring dentils near the date. Additional blurry clash marks in the field between brow and y. Reverse rim break on ATE, covering the top of T and touching the left top serif of s. Newcomb Zc-Fc.

VII. Rim break below 18 is still larger. Additional heavier clash marks above the drapery and below v, Reverse cracks through the tops of ST to the rim break and through the tops of ES to the rim where it joins the first crack of state ill. Newcomb 7c-Fd.

Rarity 1.

Remarks: ANS has a specimen, ex Mrs. C. D. Norton, with the obverse struck through a round-headed pin.

The pin was bent at a right angle, originally about 33 millimeters long and not embedded, probably dropping out in the Mint. (Illustrated in Doty, Macmillan Encyclopedic Dictionary of Numismatics, s.v. Error, p. 127.)
